Traction Engine

Eric Whittaker with the latest addition to his range of rides - The Coin Slot, August 1970

Manufactured by Whittaker Brothers, this traction engine ride was released in August 1970. It was specifically aimed at showmen who had given up their travelling days and turned their attention to the more static amusement arcade business.

Eric Whittaker originally got the idea from Michael Mason Snr. of Mason's Automatic Supplies (main distributors for Whittaker Brothers at the time) who wanted one built to represent his father Albert's old steam engine.  Les Quaintance brought the idea to life by designing this beautiful replica.  It had a diagonal rocking movement, and a push button steam whistle.

The ride could be personalised with the name of an amusement arcade or owner on the top of the engine and the name of the vehicle itself on the side.

The very first one went to the Masons' Olympia Amusement Arcade in Cleveleys (of course) and, to the best of my knowledge, was still there right up until the arcade was sold in 2023, albeit in storage.
