Robert E. Lee

1980s Whittaker Brothers Leaflet

Released in the mid-1970s, the Robert E. Lee paddle steamer was manufactured by Whittaker Brothers and replaced their earlier River Queen ride.  One of their more popular rides, Whittakers continued to make the boat for many years.  It eventually got discontinued in the 1990s before being relaunched in 2013 with an updated version featuring a video game!

Clacton-on-Sea, August 1996

The original 1970s version had running, flashing lights around the paddles and played an electronic version of the Robert E. Lee Signature Tune when in motion.  It also included a push button for a horn sound effect.

According to a 1980s Whittaker Brothers leaflet, the original ship measured 58" x 21" x 51" and weighed 143lbs.

Butlins Minehead, 1991.  If you listen carefully, you can hear the Robert E. Lee's music playing throughout this video clip. In case people can't spot it, the ride is located outside the arcade in the background.  Later in the film, the camera does zoom in a little. (Not specifically on the ride, but fortunately incorporating the ride in the frame so we can get a better view of it!)
