R L Smith was founded by Harold Smith and John Mirgaux in 1972. They were based at 329 Whapload Road, Lowestoft.
They printed their first advert in The Coin Slot in April of the following year, promoting their new range of small rides.
In February 1974, they exhibited at the Blackpool Exhibition for the first time with four of their rides; Noddy Car, Little Duke Tug Boat, Rocking Horse and Speedboat. They were currently working on a petrol engine boat for kiddies' lakes.
They first exhibited at the Amusement Trades Exhibition in January 1977 (by which time John Mirgaux had left the company and set up his own, JM Kiddie Rides). By this time, they appear to have stopped manufacturing coin operated rides and were instead showing their sixteen seater aeroplane juvenile fairground ride.
