The World's Fair, February 13th 1960
This beautiful roundabout was released by Edwin Hall & Co. at the Amusement Trades Exhibition in 1960. It was essentially an updated version of the earlier Round-About, but this time with an ornate wooden canopy and four striped support poles around the outside. While the Round-About could be bought with a variety of different animals, as well as Muffin the Mule and Noddy-themed mounts, the Carousel was always sold with a pair of identical horses, similar in design to Hall's latest Horse, but in a smaller size.
Clips from the TV series' "Hope It Rains", filmed in Bognor Regis in 1992/1993
The Carousel shown in the video above belonged to John Harrison who owned Bognor Pier and various amusement concessions around the area at the time. John Harrison was also the owner of my three vintage horse kiddie rides (who must have been located nearby when this was filmed). The Bognor Pier rides were my inspiration for The History of Coin Operated Rides so we have these rides to thank for this website!
Alas, the Carousel itself must have been scrapped some time between filming this series and my first visit to Bognor in 1996, so I never actually got to see one of these Carousels in real life. It was thrilling to find this clip of one in action, especially John Harrisons's. The horses on the Carousel actually appear to have been painted in the same colour as my "Carousel" horse. The sentimental side of me almost feels like these are her foals who I never got to meet!
